Pushing Back on Universalism through Art

The idea of French Universalism (giving up affiliations to one’s identities, the history of the groups one is a part of, and the experiences that may be unique to these groups) seems almost inherently at odds with art. The streets of Paris are filled with art that speaks to specific traits and experiences of marginalized groups and that addresses history and politics that may not be usually discussed in mainstream French culture.
